Conquering Emotions One Playlist at a Time: "Breathe"

Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. We all struggle at some point. And sometimes we all need the reminder that it’s ok. It’s ok to fall, it’s ok to fail, it’s ok to not be at your best all the time. It’s ok because we grow, we learn, and we continue to move forward.

We can’t change the past. There’s no restart or rewind button that allows us to go back and make things happen differently. We also can’t pause or fast forward the present. We can’t make moments never end or speed them up to get past them. All we can do is live our lives in the present, accept and learn from our past mistakes, and make decisions in an attempt to create the future we envision for ourselves.

My words may make this sound easy. Live in the moment, let go and learn from the past, move forward in a positive direction. This is not always easy, and sometimes it may feel next to impossible. Because sometimes it just seems easier to get lost in an abyss of difficult emotions, or to lose motivation for a positive future. This is why having coping skills is so very important. Finding what works for you to help you through a difficult moment. Deep breaths, loud music, reading, writing, running, drawing, singing, meditating...find what works for you. Different things work for different people. Think about what would work best for you in a difficult moment. It’s not that coping skills solve the problem, they just make finding the solution to the problem a little bit easier.

“Breathe” by Anna Nalick reminds us to just breathe because eventually we can figure out a way through and a way to be ok.

LYRICS
Two AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake,
Can you help me unravel my latest mistake,
I don't love him, winter just wasn't my season
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize, hypocrites,
You're all here for the very same reason
'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button girl,
So cradle your head in you hands
And breathe, just breathe,
Whoa breathe, just breathe
May he turn twenty one on the base at Fort Bliss
Just today he sat down to the flask in his fist,
Ain't been sober, since maybe October of last year.
Here in town you can tell he's been down for a while,
But my God it's so beautiful when the boy smiles,
Wanna hold him, maybe I'll just sing about it.
'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button boys,
So cradle your head in your hands,
And breathe, just breathe,
Whoa breathe, just breathe
There's a light at each end of this tunnel, you shout
But you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
These mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again
If you only try turning around.
Two AM and I'm still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, its no longer
Inside of me, threatening the life it belongs to
And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
'Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you'll use them, however you want to
'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand.
And breathe, just breathe
Whoa breathe, just breathe,
