Conquering Emotions one Playlist at a Time: Try

We are constantly faced with society’s expectations of who we should be, what we should look like, and even the things we should own. Living up to these expectations is exhausting. At the end of the day the only person’s opinion of us that should matter is our own. Yes we want to be accepted and liked by others, but most importantly we need to accept and love ourselves first. Sometimes this is so much easier said than done. But listen to the way you talk to yourself, even say your thoughts about yourself out loud. Would these be words you would say to another person, or are these words things you would never dream of speaking out loud? Let’s work on being nicer to ourselves, accepting ourselves, even if it’s just saying one positive thing to ourselves every day. One positive thought can lead to more, and we will find ourselves not only complimenting ourselves, but liking and accepting ourselves as well. None of us are perfect. There is no perfect way we should be, look, or act. We are each unique in our own specific way, and we are going to make mistakes along the way. Give yourself some grace, and be the best you for you, not for what everyone else thinks you should be.

This week’s song is “Try” by Colbie Caillat. This video sends a powerful message, one that truly brings its lyrics to life. I encourage you to watch it.

Lyrics

Put your make-up on
Get your nails done
Curl your hair
Run the extra mile
Keep it slim so they like you, do they like you?

Get your sexy on
Don't be shy, girl
Take it off
This is what you want, to belong, so they like you
Do you like you?

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Mm, mm

Get your shopping on, at the mall, max your credit cards
You don't have to choose, buy it all, so they like you
Do they like you?

Wait a second,
Why, should you care, what they think of you
When you're all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to bend until you break
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Mm, mm

You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing

You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try, try, try, try
You don't have to try
You don't have to try

Take your make-up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror, at yourself
Don't you like you?
'Cause I like you
